The Geass.

The Geass, also known as the Power Of The King, is a mysterious power given to one through a contract from an immortal being. The Geass forms within the eye, soon becoming uncontrollable and may form in both eyes. The power of Geass differs between users, and the limitations and restrictions also vary.



The process in which the Geass is obtained is done between an immortal individual and a human. The immortal person forms a contract with the human, where the human will be able to live on with the power of Geass, so long as the Geass user fulfills the immortal person's conditions.



The Contract of the Geass:

Lelouch's Geass has the power of absolute obedience. Given to him by C.C., anyone who makes eye contact with Lelouch and hears his command will obey what he asks without hesitation or question. His Geass manifested in his left eye. At first he was able to toggle his Geass on and off, but soon it became out of control, a condition known as Geass Runaway. C.C. gives him a contact lens to keep his power in check, although his Geass will become powerful enough to render it useless.

Because Lelouch's Geass is the most explored Geass in the series, it also seems to have the most limitations. Taken from Wikipedia.

* Commands must be issued verbally.
* The victim must make direct eye contact for commands to be issued. The maximum effective distance is 270 meters. Line of sight via a reflective surface is sufficient for the effect to occur.
* Commands may be issued only once to any given individual, but any number of commands may be issued at initial application so long as eye contact is unbroken. Since Jeremiah's Geass Canceller negates all Geass effects, those exposed to it may be commanded once again.
* The victim will not perform any action disallowed by their physical or mental capabilities, though they will try to carry out the command to the best of their ability. For example, a victim will not be able to correctly answer a question they don't know the answer to, but will direct the user to someone who can if they are able. However, commands that affect the mind or consciousness, such as telling the victim to forget something, will take effect despite the fact that the victim could not normally force themselves to do so.
* An action will be carried out for as long as dictated in its command, or upon the indicated conditional circumstance. Eye contact does not need to be maintained for command execution to occur. No upper limit has been established, but the conditional command Lelouch gives Suzaku is still in effect more than a year later.
* The victim's memories for the duration of command issue and execution are sealed and cannot be recalled.
* As demonstrated in Princess Euphemia's response to the command that she kill the Japanese, a victim may resist a commanded action to some degree if it is utterly repugnant to them.

Mao is a Geass user who had received his Geass at the age of 6 from C.C. Mao's Geass allows him to read minds of others. It manifested in both eyes, unlike Lelouch's, whose Geass manifested only in the left eye. He can read anyone's mind within a 500 meter radius, and he can concentrate on reading one individual's mind, although the radius is shortened. His Geass soon became uncontrollable and started reading everyone's minds constantly. He soon became insane from the constant influx of thoughts and wears sunglasses to hide his eyes and headphones that repeat words of encouragement from C.C. in order to block off the thoughts of others.

C.C. abandoned him when he wasn't able to fulfill his part of the contract.

Rolo is a Geass user and a highly trained assassin.

His Geass has the power known as the seal of absolute suspension. He is able to suspend the sense of time to those within range; it makes it as though victims are frozen in time. The Geass manifests in his right eye, and a red sphere forms around the area where he chooses to affect. Electronic items and obstacles don't hinder effectiveness, and eye contact isn't required. He can use the ability repeatedly, and it doesn't seem to have suffered from Geass Runaway at all, despite the fact Rolo had it since he was young.

The only weakness of Rolo's Geass is that his heart stops when he uses it limiting his uses to short bursts. The range of his use and the number of people he affects also adds to the strain.
